History

Frank Robinson began the design of the R22 in 1973 and flew the first helicopter on 28. August 1975. A second followed in early 1977, and FAA certification was achieved in March 1979. Deliveries started in October of that year, with Tim Tucker being the first purchaser of an R22.
In October 1983, the R22 Alpha with an Lycoming O-320-B2C engine followed. It had a take-off weight of 620 kg.
On 5 August 1985 the Beta model was certified. The current Beta II model was introduced in 1995.
On October 15, 1999, Robinson delivered the 3000th R22 in ceremonies at Torrance. David Morley and Mike Creed from Sloane Helicopters in England accepted the helicopter.
